Author’s Notes

My Very First In-N-Out Run

When I started college, I met many people from California who kept saying nothing compares to In-N-Out. At that time, we didn’t have one nearby.

At the end of my freshman year they opened a location in St. George, Utah — a three-and-a-half-hour drive. My friends were so excited we made a day of it and drove down so they could show me “the best burger ever.”

The trip was fun. I liked the burgers, wasn’t thrilled with the fries, but absolutely loved the sauce. It quickly became my favorite part of the meal.

Now there’s an In-N-Out about ten minutes from my house, but I still usually make my own In-N-Out Sauce at home. This copycat is spot on and takes burgers and fries to the next level.

All the ingredients in this recipe prepped out for easy assembly including the sugar, salt, mayo, relish, ketchup, and vinegar.

In-N-Out Sauce Recipe Ingredients

Ingredient Notes
Mayo Use a good-quality mayonnaise for a smooth texture and the best flavor.
Ketchup & sugar Add sweetness and the familiar color—a classic ketchup works well.
Sweet pickle relish Chop finely if needed so the sauce stays smooth rather than chunky.
White vinegar Provides a bright, tangy balance to the richness.
Salt Start with a small amount and adjust to taste.

Quick Tip

Because the recipe is simple, quality matters. Use good ingredients so each flavor stands out.

Chelsea’s Top Tip

Let It Sit Overnight!

The flavor deepens after chilling. If possible, make the sauce the day before and stir it briefly before serving.

In-N-Out Sauce Recipe

By Chelsea Lords
A creamy, flavorful sauce that resembles the original In-N-Out sauce and works on many dishes.
Prep Time: 15 minutes
Total Time: 15 minutes
Servings: 6 servings

Equipment

  • Medium bowl
  • Whisk

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup mayo use your favorite brand
  • 3 tablespoons ketchup classic ketchup works well
  • 2 tablespoons sweet pickle relish
  • 1-1/2 teaspoons white vinegar
  • 1/2 teaspoon granulated sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  • Add all ingredients to a medium bowl and whisk until smooth and fully combined. Taste and adjust seasoning as needed.
  • Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour. Chilling longer—ideally overnight—improves the flavor.
  • Stir well before serving. Enjoy on burgers, fries, chicken, or sandwiches.

Recipe Notes

Storage: Keep the sauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 4–5 days. Stir before using if the mixture separates slightly. Freezing is not recommended as it alters the texture.
