The Utah Dessert “Salad” Thing

Calling this a “salad” might sound odd, but in Utah dessert salads are common at potlucks and family dinners.

This recipe blends chopped Snickers, crisp Granny Smith apples, instant vanilla pudding, and whipped topping into a fluffy, sweet dish that balances tart and candy flavors.

Because it includes fruit and is tossed together, you’ll sometimes see Snickers Salad served alongside main dishes — it’s a regional comfort-food habit.

All the ingredients in this recipe prepped out for easy assembly including the milk, cool whip, caramel, toffee, snickers, apples, and jello.

Ingredients in This Snickers Salad Recipe

Ingredient Notes
Instant vanilla pudding mix & milk Use instant pudding and whisk with milk until smooth and slightly thickened.
Whipped topping Fully thawed so it folds in easily and keeps the mixture light. You can substitute freshly whipped cream.
Granny Smith apples Provides a crisp, tart bite. Dice just before mixing; an optional quick saltwater soak prevents browning.
Snickers bars Chill briefly for cleaner cuts and dice into small pieces. Reserve a few pieces for garnish.
Caramel sauce & toffee bits Optional toppings. Add just before serving for texture and shine.

Quick Tip

This recipe calls for one 8-ounce container of whipped topping. To make fresh whipped cream substitute 1 cup heavy cream, 1/2 cup powdered sugar, and 1/2 teaspoon vanilla; beat until firm peaks form (2–4 minutes).

An easy, no-bake dessert featuring crisp apples, chopped Snickers, and a creamy vanilla pudding and whipped topping mixture.
Prep Time: 25 minutes
Total Time: 25 minutes
Servings: 8 servings

Equipment

  • Large bowl

Ingredients

  • 4 Granny Smith apples diced
  • 1 (3.4-ounce) package instant vanilla pudding mix
  • 1 cup milk whole, 1%, or 2%
  • 1 (8-ounce) container frozen whipped topping fully thawed
  • 5 full-sized Snickers candy bars
  • Caramel sauce and/or peanut butter optional, to drizzle
  • Toffee bits optional topping

Instructions

  • Dice apples into bite-size pieces (no need to peel). To prevent browning, soak in 3 cups room-temperature water mixed with 1½ teaspoons fine sea salt for 5–10 minutes. Drain, rinse, shake off excess, and pat dry.
  • Unwrap and dice Snickers bars into small pieces. Reserve about 1/4 cup for topping.
  • In a large bowl, whisk the instant pudding mix and milk until smooth and slightly thickened. Gently fold in the thawed whipped topping until fully combined.
  • Fold in the diced apples and Snickers pieces with a spatula. Cover and chill for 30 minutes or until ready to serve.
  • Just before serving, stir gently, smooth the top, and garnish with reserved candy, toffee bits, and a drizzle of caramel or peanut butter if desired. Serve immediately.
