Indulge in this flavorful Chicken Philly Cheesesteak Recipe! Tender chicken, perfectly sautéed vegetables, and gooey, melted cheese all nestled in a warm, toasted hoagie roll. It’s a satisfying and surprisingly easy meal that’s perfect for weeknights or weekend gatherings.

Why Chicken Philly Cheesesteak? The Author’s Note

I was inspired by a classic Philly Cheesesteak recipe and challenged myself to create an equally delicious version using chicken. As someone who typically prefers steak, I was honestly skeptical at first. But I was completely wrong! This chicken version is just as craveable as the original, and in some ways, even better.
It’s also incredibly simple to make. The sautéed vegetables are bursting with flavor, the seasoned chicken is surprisingly delicious for the minimal effort required, and the melted cheese on toasted buns is simply irresistible. All the components work together harmoniously, making this Chicken Philly Cheesesteak Recipe a new favorite in my kitchen!

The Key Ingredients for Your Chicken Philly Cheesesteak
Let’s break down the essential ingredients for crafting the perfect Chicken Philly Cheesesteak. Each component plays a crucial role in achieving that authentic taste and texture.
| Ingredient Group | Helpful Tip |
|---|---|
| Chicken | Slice the chicken thinly and pound it lightly. This ensures even cooking and maximum tenderness. Allowing the chicken to rest after cooking helps retain its juices. |
| Seasonings | Keep the seasoning simple and balanced. A blend of salt, pepper, garlic powder, and Italian seasoning is all you need to enhance the natural flavors without overpowering the other ingredients. |
| Peppers & Onion | Slice the peppers and onion into thin strips. This allows them to soften quickly and evenly while preventing them from overwhelming the sandwich’s overall texture. |
| Cheese | For the ultimate melt, I recommend using white American or provolone cheese. If possible, get it freshly sliced from the deli and ask for a very thin cut. This ensures a smooth, even melt without excessive greasiness. |
| Rolls & Butter | Toasting the rolls with butter cut-side down creates a crispy barrier that prevents the sandwich from becoming soggy. A little garlic powder added to the butter elevates the flavor profile. |

Step-by-Step: Crafting Your Chicken Philly Cheesesteak
Follow these simple steps to create a delicious and satisfying Chicken Philly Cheesesteak at home.
- Prep Chicken: Slice the chicken breasts in half horizontally, then lightly pound them to an even thickness. Season both sides generously with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and Italian seasoning. Set aside.
- Cook Chicken: Heat a skillet over medium-high heat. Add the seasoned chicken and cook for approximately 3 minutes per side, until cooked through and lightly browned. Remove from the skillet, let rest for a few minutes, and then thinly slice against the grain.
- Cook Veggies: In the same skillet, sauté thinly sliced bell peppers and onions until softened and slightly caramelized. Add minced garlic and cook for another 30 seconds until fragrant.
- Combine & Melt: Return the sliced chicken to the skillet with the vegetables. Toss to combine. Divide the mixture into portions, top each with slices of cheese (American or Provolone), cover the skillet, and allow the cheese to melt completely.
- Toast & Assemble: While the cheese is melting, prepare the hoagie rolls. Spread softened butter on the cut sides and lightly sprinkle with garlic powder. Toast the rolls cut-side down in a skillet or on a griddle until golden brown. Fill each toasted roll with the cheesy chicken and vegetable mixture. Serve immediately and enjoy!

Perfect Pairings: Sides to Complement Your Cheesesteak
While the Chicken Philly Cheesesteak is a complete meal in itself, adding a side dish can elevate your dining experience. Here are some of my favorite sides to serve alongside this delicious sandwich:
- Fresh Fruit or Fruit Salad: A refreshing and healthy counterpoint to the richness of the cheesesteak. A fruit salad is a great way to incorporate a variety of flavors and textures.
- Crispy Oven Fries or Waffle Fries: A classic pairing that never disappoints. Oven-baked fries are a healthier alternative to traditional deep-fried versions.
- Simple Side Salad with Light Dressing: A light and refreshing salad provides a contrasting texture and flavor to the hearty cheesesteak. A simple side salad with vinaigrette is ideal.
- Potato Chips or Crunchy Chips: For a quick and easy option, a bag of your favorite potato chips or other crunchy chips adds a satisfying salty crunch.
- Roasted Vegetables: Roasted vegetables like broccoli or sweet potato bites offer a nutritious and flavorful side dish.
Tips for Storage and Reheating
If you happen to have any leftovers (which is rare!), here’s how to properly store and reheat your Chicken Philly Cheesesteak.
Store the leftover chicken and vegetable mixture in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Keep the rolls separate to prevent them from getting soggy. To reheat, simply warm the filling in a skillet over medium heat. Once heated through, assemble the cheesesteak on freshly toasted rolls.

Equipment
- Large non-stick skillet
Ingredients
Chicken
- 2 medium boneless, skinless chicken breasts (1 pound), thinly sliced in half to get 4 pieces
- ¾ teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 3 tablespoons olive oil, divided
Veggies
- 1 green bell pepper, thinly sliced
- 1 small yellow onion, thinly sliced (1 cup)
- 1 tablespoon minced garlic
For Serving
- 4 hoagie or sub rolls
- Unsalted butter, softened, plus garlic powder
- 2 tablespoons Parmesan (optional)
- 6 to 8 slices white American cheese or provolone
Instructions
- Slice chicken breasts in half horizontally to make 4 pieces, then lightly pound to even thickness. Season both sides with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and Italian seasoning.
- Heat 2 tablespoons butter and 1 tablespoon olive oil in a very large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Once melted, add chicken in an even layer. Cook 3 minutes, flip, then cook 2 to 4 more minutes until cooked through. Transfer to a plate and rest 5-10 minutes, then thinly slice against the grain.
- Slice hoagie rolls most of the way through, keeping them attached. Spread softened butter on the cut sides and lightly sprinkle with garlic powder. Toast in a large skillet or electric griddle over medium heat until golden. Set aside.
- Add remaining 2 tablespoons olive oil to the same skillet. Add bell pepper and onion and cook 6 to 8 minutes, stirring occasionally, until crisp-tender and lightly browned. Add garlic and cook 30 seconds, just until fragrant.
- Reduce heat to low. Return sliced chicken to the skillet and toss briefly with the veggies until heated through.
- Divide mixture into 4 piles in the skillet. Top each with a sprinkle of Parm and then cheese slices, cover, and cook 1 to 2 minutes until melted.
- Place a toasted roll over each cheesy portion. Use a spatula to scoop and flip the filling into the roll. Close, serve hot, and enjoy immediately.
Recipe Notes
- Note 1: I like adding a little grated Parmesan for an extra layer of flavor.
- Note 2: I love American or provolone here. If you can, grab it from the deli and ask for it sliced very thin so it melts quickly without overcooking the filling. Pre-sliced cheese is often too thick and won’t melt as smoothly.
- Storage: Store chicken and veggies in an airtight container in the fridge up to 3 days. Keep rolls separate. Reheat the filling, then assemble on freshly toasted rolls.
