This exquisite salad recipe draws its inspiration from a memorable dining experience a few weeks ago, one that captivated my taste buds and ignited a new passion for unexpected flavor combinations. Initially, the idea of incorporating grapes into a green salad struck me as quite unconventional, perhaps even a bit peculiar. However, after that first delightful bite, and subsequently recreating a similar masterpiece in my own kitchen, I am now a firm believer in the magic that grapes bring to a salad. They are truly a game-changer!

The sweet, juicy burst of grapes complements the other fruity elements of this salad beautifully, creating a harmonious blend of flavors and textures. When coated in the rich and tangy Cherry Balsamic Salad Dressing, their natural sweetness is amplified, transforming them into irresistible little jewels that elevate every mouthful. This unique combination makes for a salad that is both refreshing and surprisingly satisfying, destined to become a staple in your culinary repertoire.

The Star Ingredient: Cherry Balsamic Salad Dressing

At the heart of this sensational salad lies the truly unique Cherry Balsamic Salad Dressing. This homemade vinaigrette is remarkably easy to prepare and infuses the entire dish with a vibrant, fruity tang that sets it apart. The secret to its incredible depth of flavor is the careful selection of cherry juice.

Choosing the Right Cherry Juice

For this particular dressing, I wholeheartedly recommend using 100% black cherry juice. This isn’t just a suggestion; it’s crucial for achieving the perfect balance of sweetness and rich cherry flavor without any artificial additives or overwhelming tartness.

When selecting your cherry juice, make sure to read the ingredients label carefully. The only ingredient listed should be “cherries.” If you see “filtered water” or other fruit juices, it indicates a diluted product that will result in a less potent and less flavorful dressing. Authentic 100% black cherry juice boasts a naturally sweet profile, eliminating the need for excessive added sugar in your vinaigrette.

From my own experience, brands like R.W. Knudsen Just Black Cherry Juice® have consistently delivered excellent results, with their ingredients simply stating “juice from ripe, whole black cherries.” The Great Value 100% Black Cherry Juice® is another reliable option. The key takeaway is simple: ensure your juice is pure, unadulterated black cherry for the best possible flavor.

Quick Tip: Navigating Cherry Juice Varieties

The world of cherry juices can be a bit confusing, but understanding the differences is key to perfecting this recipe. For our dressing, black cherry juice is the ideal choice. It’s inherently sweet and provides a robust fruit flavor without being overpowering. You’ll find it adds a beautiful, complex sweetness to our balsamic dressing without needing much extra sugar.

In contrast, tart cherry juice (also known as sour cherry juice), whether sweetened or unsweetened, lives up to its name. It’s quite pucker-worthy and, while incredibly healthy and beneficial for other uses (like post-workout recovery), its intense tartness isn’t what we’re aiming for in this dressing. It would drastically alter the desired flavor profile.

Lastly, be wary of “cherry juice cocktail.” These products often contain a blend of various fruit juices, high fructose corn syrup, and other sugars, making them unsuitable for our pure, flavorful balsamic dressing. Always opt for 100% black cherry juice to ensure the authentic taste and quality of your homemade vinaigrette.

Building Your Perfect Salad Bowl: Customizing This Fruity Masterpiece

While the combination of ingredients in this salad is truly delightful as presented, its versatility is one of its strongest attributes. Feel free to personalize your salad to match your taste preferences or to utilize ingredients you have on hand. Here are some fantastic substitutions and additions that can transform this mixed greens salad into your own unique creation:

  • Dried Fruit Variations: If dried sweet cherries aren’t available or you prefer a different flavor, consider using dried cranberries for a tart counterpoint that still offers a chewy texture. Alternatively, dried tart cherries, with their bright tang, can also pair exceptionally well with the Cherry Balsamic Salad Dressing, offering a more intense fruity note.
  • Add Fresh Berries: For an extra layer of freshness and color, thinly sliced strawberries are a magnificent addition. Their natural sweetness and soft texture blend seamlessly with the other fruit components.
  • Creamy Avocado Boost: Introduce a creamy, rich element by adding a ripe, chopped avocado. Its smooth texture and healthy fats provide a wonderful contrast to the crisp greens and crunchy almonds.
  • Almond Enhancements: Elevate the humble almond by candying them for a sweet crunch, toasting them for a deeper, nuttier flavor, or simply buying pre-roasted honey almonds for an instant upgrade. The added sweetness and crispiness are truly addictive.
  • Pear Alternatives: Fresh, ripe pears are ideal, but if they are out of season or hard to find, good quality canned pears (preferably packed in juice, not heavy syrup) can be a convenient and delicious substitute. Ensure they are well-drained and sliced before adding.
  • Cheese Choices: While feta cheese offers a wonderful salty tang, other crumbled cheeses can also shine in this salad. Consider bleu cheese or Gorgonzola for a bolder, more pungent flavor, or creamy goat cheese for a milder, earthy richness that complements the fruit beautifully.
  • Sweetener Swap in Dressing: For those who prefer honey, you can easily replace the granulated sugar with honey in the Cherry Balsamic Salad Dressing. Start with 1-2 tablespoons of honey, as honey is generally sweeter than white sugar, and adjustments may be needed to achieve your desired sweetness level (it’s not a 1:1 substitution).

Tips for a Perfect Salad Every Time

Creating a truly exceptional salad goes beyond just selecting fresh ingredients; it involves thoughtful preparation and attention to detail. Here are some additional tips to ensure your Cherry Balsamic Mixed Greens Salad is consistently amazing:

  • Ingredient Quality: Always start with the freshest produce. Crisp greens, firm grapes, and ripe but not overly soft pears make a significant difference in taste and texture.
  • Temperature Matters: Serve your salad chilled. Refrigerating all components before assembly ensures a wonderfully refreshing experience.
  • Don’t Overdress: The Cherry Balsamic Salad Dressing is potent and flavorful. Start with a light drizzle and add more as needed. An overdressed salad can become soggy and lose its appeal.
  • Proper Emulsification: When making the dressing, ensure all ingredients are well combined. A small blender works wonders for creating a smooth, emulsified vinaigrette. If mixing by hand, vigorous shaking in a jar is key.
  • Toast Your Nuts: Toasting almonds (or any nuts) brings out their natural oils, enhancing their flavor and adding a delightful crunch. Watch them carefully as they can burn quickly.
  • Prevent Pear Browning: Tossing sliced pears with a bit of lemon juice immediately after slicing helps prevent oxidation and keeps them looking fresh and appetizing.

Leftover Cherry Balsamic Salad Dressing and Storage

This recipe for Cherry Balsamic Salad Dressing yields a generous amount, often more than you’ll need for a single serving of the salad, unless you’re particularly fond of extra dressing! This is actually a fantastic advantage, as the dressing is incredibly versatile and stores wonderfully.

Once prepared, your homemade Cherry Balsamic Salad Dressing can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 5-7 days. While you certainly have the option to halve the dressing recipe if you prefer, I highly recommend making the full amount. This ensures you have a ready supply of delicious dressing to elevate other meals throughout the week. Imagine drizzling this vibrant vinaigrette over simple green salads, using it as a marinade for chicken or fish, or even tossing it with roasted vegetables. Its sweet and tangy profile makes it a superb complement to a variety of dishes. Get creative and explore other ways to enjoy your leftover dressing!

Salad Storage Tips

Unlike the dressing, this fresh fruit and greens salad, like most salads, does not make for ideal leftovers once dressed. The greens can wilt, and the fruits can become soggy. To ensure maximum freshness and crispness, it is always best to assemble and dress the salad immediately before serving. If you’re preparing this salad in advance or anticipate not eating it all in one sitting, keep all the individual ingredients separate from the dressing. Store them in airtight containers in the refrigerator. Only combine and toss with the dressing right before you are ready to enjoy it. For the best presentation and flavor, sprinkle the crumbled feta cheese on top after the salad has been dressed.

Equipment

  • Small blender

Ingredients

Dressing
  • 5 tablespoons 100% black cherry juice
  • 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
  • 3 tablespoons sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon Dijon-style mustard
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
Salad
  • 6 cups mixed greens
  • 1 large pear thinly sliced
  • 2 teaspoons lemon juice
  • 3/4 cup red grapes
  • 1/2 cup sliced almonds
  • 1/2 cup dried cherries
  • 1/3 cup feta cheese
  • sliced strawberries optional

Instructions

  • To make the dressing, combine all the ingredients except the olive oil in a small blender, pulse until combined. Drizzle in the olive oil and pulse again until just combined and emulsified. Alternatively, combine all the ingredients in a jar and shake until well combined. You may need to stir up the sugar as it tends to settle on the bottom.
  • To toast the almonds, spread the sliced almonds in a single layer in a dry pan over medium-high heat. Stir every 15 seconds for about 1–2 minutes, or until they slightly darken and become fragrant—be careful not to let them burn. You can also use honey-roasted almonds in this salad.
  • Thinly slice a large pear and toss with the lemon juice. Slice the red grapes in half. Add the sliced pears, sliced grapes, almonds, and dried cherries to the mixed greens. Toss with dressing and sprinkle feta cheese on top.
