Key Ingredients & Simple Swaps
- Bananas - Ripe bananas bring natural sweetness and a creamy texture. Frozen bananas work really well here too!
- Unsweetened cocoa powder - Gives you that deep chocolate flavor without added extra sugar.
- Peanut butter - Adds creaminess, flavor, and great for boosting energy. Almond butter or sunflower seed butter also work well here. Or use a chocolate hazelnut spread for a more indulgent treat!
- Milk (of your choice) - Regular whole milk, almond, oat, soy... you do you.
- Greek yogurt - Thickens the smoothie and adds protein. Use vanilla for extra sweetness or plain to keep it mild. You can use coconut yogurt for a dairy-free alternative.
- Honey or maple syrup (optional) - If your bananas are super ripe, you might not need any extra sweetener at all.
- Vanilla extract - Just a splash deepens the flavor.
- Ice - Essential for that frosty, smoothie-shop texture!
Tips for the Best Smoothies!
Freeze your bananas in advance. You can use fresh bananas as well, but frozen really helps get that frosty smoothie texture. You can buy pre-frozen sliced bananas or you can do it yourself. Just slice your bananaz, freeze them in a single layer, and then toss into a food storage bag so they're ready whenever you are.
Want a thicker smoothie? Add more ice or frozen bananas to the mix.
Want a thinner smoothie? Splash in a bit of extra milk until you are happy with the consistency.
Variations to Try
- Make it a mocha: Add 1 teaspoon of instant espresso powder for a coffee-infused kick.
- Add greens: A handful of spinach blends right in and adds nutrients without changing the flavor. I know that sounds a bit weird, but I swear you can't even taste the spinach!
- Boost it: Toss in chia seeds, flaxseed meal, or a scoop of protein powder for extra staying power!
- Turn it into a smoothie bowl: Pour into a bowl and top with sliced banana, cacao nibs, granola, or chopped peanuts for a complete breakfast bowl.
