The Easier Way to Do Caramel Apples

My middle son’s favorite treat is a caramel apple. We make them together every fall and winter; it’s messy and fun. When we don’t have time for full caramel apples, these apple nachos are the perfect shortcut. He often prefers them — they’re faster to make and just as satisfying.

Even when I choose less-sugary toppings like almond or peanut butter and sprinkle on nuts, he still calls these the best snack or dessert. They’re quick, easy, and delicious—ideal for an after-school snack, party platter, or simple dessert.

All the ingredients in this recipe prepped out for easy assembly including apples, pepitas, marshmallows, nuts, granola, chocolate, toffee bits, butterfingers, almond butter, peanut butter, chocolate, and caramel.

How To Keep Apples From Browning

If you’ll serve the apple nachos immediately, you can skip this step. If you’re prepping ahead or the apples will sit out, this simple trick keeps slices looking fresh and crisp.

Here’s how:

  1. Mix: Stir 1/2 teaspoon salt into 1 cup cool water.
  2. Soak: Add the apple slices and let them sit for 5 to 10 minutes.
  3. Rinse: Drain and rinse the apples thoroughly under cool water, then dry.

Done. Apples stay crisp for hours and can even hold up overnight in the fridge. They will not taste salty after rinsing.

Chelsea’s Notes

My Favorite Toppings for Apple Nachos

  • Nut butter: Peanut, almond, cashew, or maple nut butter.
  • Crunch: Granola, chopped nuts, chia seeds, or toasted coconut.
  • Dried fruit: Cranberries, raisins, cherries, or chopped dates.
  • Extra sweetness: Honey or maple syrup.
  • Spices: Cinnamon, pumpkin pie spice, or apple pie spice.
  • Caramel: Homemade or store-bought caramel sauce, warmed and drizzled.
  • Chocolate: Mini chocolate chips or chopped chocolate.
  • Candy: Mini M&M’s, Reese’s Pieces, toffee bits, or chopped candy bars for an indulgent version.
Two topping options: chocolate and caramel, or almond butter, pepitas, and chocolate chips.

Best Apples for Apple Nachos

Use your favorite apple. Crisp, sweet varieties like Honeycrisp or Fuji work beautifully with nut butter. For dessert-style apple nachos with lots of sweet toppings, tart Granny Smith apples provide a pleasant balance.

Apple Nachos

By Chelsea Lords
Apple Nachos turn crisp apple slices into the easiest treat with caramel, nut butter, chocolate, and plenty of crunchy toppings.
Prep Time: 10
Total Time: 10
Servings: 2 servings

Equipment

  • Small microwave-safe bowl

Ingredients

Nut Butter Apple Nachos
  • 2 large apples sliced (see note)
  • 1/4 cup nut butter of choice
  • 1/4 cup mini chocolate chips
  • 2 tablespoons pumpkin seeds
  • 2 tablespoons dried sweetened cranberries
  • Optional toppings see notes for ideas
Caramel Apple Nachos
  • 2 large apples sliced (see note)
  • 1/4 cup caramel sauce warmed for drizzling
  • 1/4 cup English toffee baking bits
  • 2 tablespoons mini chocolate chips

Instructions

  • Prepare apples (cold apples work best). Slice about 1/4-inch thick and lay the slices in a single layer around the outside of a plate. Continue layering inward in a circular pattern to form a decorative platter.
  • Place nut butter or caramel in a small microwave-safe bowl and heat just until warm, about 10–15 seconds. Transfer the warmed sauce to a small plastic bag, snip off a corner, and drizzle generously over the apple slices.
  • Sprinkle desired toppings over the drizzled apples—chocolate chips, toffee bits, seeds, nuts, granola, dried fruit, or a light dusting of cinnamon. Serve immediately for the best texture and flavor.

Recipe Notes

Note: Cold apples hold up better in this recipe. I slice them about 1/4-inch thick. Granny Smith apples are excellent with sweet toppings; Honeycrisp or Fuji pair beautifully with nut butter.

Toppings: Use about 2 tablespoons to 1/4 cup of each topping. Honey, maple syrup, melted dark chocolate, toasted coconut, chia seeds, granola, and lightly salted nuts are all great choices.

Caramel: Store-bought caramel works fine. If you prefer homemade, prepare and warm it before drizzling.

Keep Apples From Browning: Stir 1/2 teaspoon salt into 1 cup cool water, soak sliced apples for 5 to 10 minutes, then rinse well and dry. They’ll stay fresh-looking for hours.

Storage: These are best eaten fresh. If you need to store leftovers, keep them covered in the refrigerator and expect the apples to soften over time.
